Debussy - The Little Shepherd

Claude Debussy was born in France in 1862  His obvious gift at the piano sent him to the Paris Conservatory at age 11. Debussy won the Prix de Rome at age 22 which financed two years of further musical study in Rome. By the turn of the century Debussy had established himself as the leading figure of French music. He succumbed to colon cancer at the age of 55.

"Children's Corner" was composed for Debussy's daughter. No. 5 of the set is 'The Little Shepherd'. The melody is largely carried in the alto voice which is an opportunity to feature good player. The recorder orchestra arrangement has the other voices most resting. The poor soprano only has a hand full of notes.

'Jimbo's Lullaby' combined with 'The Little Shepherd' and 'Golliwogg's Cakewalk' which is available on IMSLP would make a very nice section in a program.
